ChatGPT Plus Now Free for College Students Until May 2025
OpenAI is offering free access to ChatGPT Plus for college students in the U.S. and Canada through May 2025. The subscription includes faster response times, access to the latest GPT-4 model, and extra features.
To qualify, students must verify their enrollment using SheerID.
ChatGPT Plus Now Free for Students as Finals Approach
AI tools have become part of daily life—whether it’s extracting text from screenshots on Pixel phones or erasing unwanted objects from photos. But at the center of it all, AI chatbots remain one of the most widely used tools. While platforms like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are in the mix, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has emerged as the most popular, particularly among college students.
With final exams on the horizon, OpenAI is offering ChatGPT Plus—the premium version of its chatbot—free to college students for two months.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X that ChatGPT Plus is now free for all college students in the U.S. and Canada through the end of May 2025. The offer is available to students—full-time or part-time—enrolled at degree-granting institutions. Students outside of these two countries are not eligible at this time.
ChatGPT Plus offers several upgrades over the free version, including priority access to OpenAI’s latest models, significantly faster response times, and useful tools tailored to academic needs. These include Deep Research, higher image generation limits, file upload capabilities, and more. Subscribers also get access to Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video generator, and the Advanced Voice Mode.
How College Students Can Get ChatGPT Plus for Free
Signing up takes just a few minutes. To claim the free ChatGPT Plus offer, visit the ChatGPT Students landing page and verify your student status through SheerID—a service that confirms enrollment at most U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. In some cases, OpenAI may ask for Single Sign-On (SSO) through your university or require you to upload documents to confirm your affiliation.
While the process is quick, it’s a solid deal—two months of ChatGPT Plus (normally $20/month) completely free for eligible students in the U.S. or Canada.
For comparison, Google doesn’t currently offer free access to Gemini Advanced for students—unless you buy a Pixel 9 Pro, which comes with a one-year subscription.
