Google Chrome to End Support for macOS Big Sur in August 2025
Google has confirmed that Chrome version 139, scheduled for release on August 19, 2025, will no longer support macOS 11 Big Sur. According to the Chrome Platform Status page, version 138 will be the last update available for users on Big Sur.
Although Chrome will still run on macOS 11 after that point, it will no longer receive security updates. Users will see a warning banner in the browser prompting them to upgrade to macOS Monterey or later in order to continue receiving updates.
In a statement, Google emphasized: “Using a supported operating system is essential to maintaining security.” The move follows Apple’s own policy, which ended security patch support for Big Sur back in 2023.
Some older Mac models—such as the 2013 MacBook Pro and the 2012 MacBook Air—are not eligible for upgrades to newer versions of macOS. As a result, users of these devices will either need to switch to a newer model or consider using ChromeOS Flex as an alternative.
macOS Big Sur was originally released in 2020. The latest version of Apple’s operating system, macOS 15 Sequoia, became available in September 2024.
