Google to Sunset Google Assistant for Consumers by March 2026, but the Service Isn’t Gone Yet

Google has been gradually moving away from the classic Google Assistant and shifting its ecosystem toward Gemini, the company’s AI-powered successor. This transition is now visible across many Google platforms, including Google TV, Wear OS, Android, Android Automotive, and several other services.

Earlier this year, Google announced that the traditional Google Assistant would lose support on most mobile devices. While users can still access Google Assistant for the moment, many features have already been removed since 2024 as part of Google’s long-term plan to migrate to Gemini.

According to an official banner on the Google Support forum for Android Auto and details shared on Google’s support page, Gemini is officially replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices. Google confirms that Google Assistant will remain usable only until March 2026.

Gemini is designed to offer everything Google Assistant could—plus a more advanced experience. It supports the same voice commands, provides more natural conversation capabilities, and includes expanded privacy features, protections for minors, and broader availability across supported languages, devices, and regions.

With the March 2026 cutoff approaching, users have roughly three to four months left before they will no longer be able to switch back to the classic Google Assistant. By then, Gemini will fully take over as Google’s primary AI assistant across the Android ecosystem.
