The USB-C port on the iPhone 17 Air may feature a significant design change.

Early design leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 Air may feature a major shift in its USB-C port compared to previous Apple models.

Apple is reportedly preparing to unveil one of its thinnest iPhones ever this September, and if the recent leaks are accurate, the iPhone 17 Air could mark one of the most dramatic design overhauls in years.

The device is expected to sport a 6.6-inch display with an incredibly slim profile—just 5.5 millimeters thick (excluding the camera bump). This would make it the thinnest iPhone in the lineup to date. For context, the iPhone 16 Pro is 8.25 mm thick, highlighting just how sleek the upcoming model might be.

Prototype models of Apple’s upcoming device, reviewed by AppleTrack, reveal that Apple has made subtle internal adjustments to accommodate the iPhone 17 Air’s ultra-slim design.

One of the most notable changes is the relocation of the USB-C port. Instead of being positioned at the center of the bottom edge—as is typical in current models—the port appears to have been shifted slightly toward the rear of the device. This change is likely intended to free up space for the internal display components.

Apple has also simplified the speaker grille design on the iPhone 17 Air. Unlike the traditional five-hole layout, early prototypes show only two speaker holes on either side of the USB-C port. This design adjustment is likely part of Apple’s strategy to save internal space—making room for critical components like the battery, processor, display parts, and speakers within a much thinner frame.

To further maximize space, reports suggest the iPhone 17 Air may feature a single rear camera instead of the usual dual or triple-lens setups. Additionally, the device is expected to omit a physical SIM card slot, relying exclusively on eSIM support.

Another rumored feature is Apple’s new C1 modem, which debuted in the iPhone 16e. This custom 5G chip is anticipated to play a significant role in optimizing power efficiency—crucial for maintaining solid battery life in such a slim form factor. Despite its compact size, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to deliver battery performance comparable to current iPhone models.
