WhatsApp Web is reportedly set to gain voice and video calling support, bringing it in line with the functionality available on its Windows and Mac desktop apps since 2021.
A recent beta update revealed early signs of the feature, suggesting that users may soon be able to make individual and group calls directly through their browsers, without needing a separate desktop application.
While no official release date has been announced, the beta appearance signals that a broader rollout could be coming soon, simplifying the setup process for new desktop devices.
The WhatsApp desktop app for Windows and Mac added audio and video calling support back in 2021. Now, four years later, WhatsApp Web appears to be next in line for the same upgrade.
Given that Messenger’s web client—which shares a similar backend—already supports calling, it was only a matter of time before WhatsApp Web caught up. Following a recent UI update that made WhatsApp Web look more like the Android app, reports indicate that Meta is now working to add voice and video call support to the browser version as well.
According to findings from WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in a recent WhatsApp Web beta update. While it’s not available in the stable release yet, the functionality seems designed to closely mirror the desktop app, supporting both individual and group calls.
When you first initiate a call via WhatsApp Web, you’ll likely be prompted to grant microphone and webcam permissions. These permissions will typically persist unless you clear your browser’s cookies and site data, although users may also have the option to grant access on a per-visit basis.
